We joined Mason Lively for his very first headlining debut at the historic Magnolia Motor Lounge near Fort Worth’s cultural district. The Victoria native rocked the venue despite it only being at half capacity for the night, giving passionate performances of his songs like “Some ‘Bout A Southern Girl” and “Senseless”.
In an interview with Texas Country Tour, Mason discussed his music, his connection with Wade Bowen, and the next steps in his performance career. Answers have been edited for clarity and brevity.
Can you tell us about yourself?
I fell in love with all kinds of music really early. I wanted to figure out how to do it. I started to learn how to sing a bit and play guitar. Luckily, that’s not all of my identity any longer. I’m also a husband now and I want to start a family. I want both that and music since I believe it is my calling. I want to continue to grow in my musical career.
That actually leads me to my next question: You recently got married, how do you balance work on the road and your personal life back home?
Luckily, I have a really cool wife. She’s cool with me being gone 6 out of the 7 days of the week due to shows. It’s a lot of back and forth while keeping up with ever-changing schedules. Everybody understands the situation and I try my best to make it work.
Do you listen to your own music when driving?
Absolutely not! Not at all. My wife will play it every once in a while and I’ll tell her “please change it”.
Wade Bowen has been influential in your career so far, how did that come to be?
I’ve been listening to Wade since before I can remember. I started opening for Wade and that was really cool. At the time, I was a fourteen-year-old kid that was freaking out on the inside. It eventually led to him wanting to produce my record. The only testament I can say to that is dreams come true, man. They really do.
If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing instead?
Figuring out how to be a musician.
*laughter*
Other than that, what I really love doing is being a husband. I also love hunting and fishing. Whatever occupation can blend all those together.
What are you hoping to add to the country music genre?
Man, that’s a good question. I’d maybe like to add a little more soul to it with a combination of a country-rock as well. I want some more soul diversity into it. While I want to use my sound to go commercial, but remain unique.
What are your goals for 2022?
First and foremost, put out more music. That’s going to be happening relatively soon. We’re under a new Nashville-based management company so I’m excited to see what that brings us. By the looks of it, 2022 will be a completely gear-shifting year where it’s not going to slow down! I’m excited!
